Global Positioning System Articles

In buying a refurbished GPS you have a couple of things that you have to look out for. While they often have a reduced price (often 10-20% off the low prices for products) there are unscrupulous individuals who will try to give you the shimmy and the shake. They offer the low price without any of the perks that would naturally come along with buying a 'new' product. The things to watch out for are:

Are the maps for the GPS you are buying currently being supported? This is a big deal and should be the first question you ask your retailer. Sometimes a specific refurbished model will not have the support you would hope it might and you will have to pay for the latest version of your maps or simply be stuck with a map that is not able to be updated. This can be a real bummer and cut into the savings you received by going with a refurbed model.

Is there a warranty attached to your model? This is important because you don't want to be left high and dry if your GPS malfunctions. Often times there is a warranty and it is exactly like the one offered on 'new' models, but asking will help you know for certain and stave off the possibility that they will try and screw you over.

Is the retailer you are talking to an authorized dealer? If they are not, the warranty on the unit could be voided. You obviously don't want that to happen. An authorized dealer is simply someone who the manufacturer knows is selling there product and they have given them permission to. If they aren't one of these dealers go find one that is.

When it comes down to it, you have to be willing to ask to questions to find out this information. If you are buying a refurbished product that has been released in the last 9 months or so then you will have a good chance that the map will be recent and that it will be supported. If it wasn't than you are running the chance that you will have to be stuck with an old map or loose some of your savings in the upgrades.

When dealing with online retailers be sure that you still get the answers that you are seeking in email form. This will help you in any disputes if something were to go wrong and the retailer turns out to be less than entirely ethical. You can never go wrong with getting something in writing.
